Weight Management with Semaglutide
Getting results faster
By now you have likely heard about it, know someone who uses it, or have used it yourself. Semaglutide. The new(ish) medication for weight loss that is being advertised all over social media and prescribed by providers everywhere. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist, a physiological regulator of appetite and caloric intake. The GLP-1 receptor is present in several areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, so patients who are on the medication tend to feel full with smaller portions and do not feel the constant nagging of “food chatter” that drives people to snack during the day.
How does semaglutide work?
Semaglutide is indicated in combination with a reduced calorie diet and physical activity to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) or who are overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m2) in the presence of at least 1 weight-related comorbid condition (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, etc). In addressing these issues early, the goal is also to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (Medscape).
How our approach differs from others
When we decided to offer semaglutide at Two Roads Wellness Clinic, we knew we needed to do things just a little bit differently than some of the other facilities and on-line programs who were also offering the medication. We needed to keep to our integrative model and make sure we were using a personalized approach. So we decided we wanted patients to meet with the provider to complete or review labs, to have a lengthy conversation about their current eating habits and movement, to discuss some of the best supplement options to prepare their gut, and to set attainable goals (short and long term). Two Roads also offers nutritional genomics that can even further identify the diet type and movement that is best for each individual. We have a nutrition coach available as well that can help patients by meeting them at the grocery store to help them learn to shop or in their home to help revamp their pantry to better fit their new healthy habits.
What does the Weight Management Program at Two Roads look like?
Our patients, at least initially, are required to come to the clinic to receive their injections weekly so they have an opportunity to have consistent weights, waist measurements, and vitals assessed; to discuss any side effects; and to ask any questions or express any concerns. We hoped this would help ensure that patients could stay ahead of any of the common side effects so they could stay on track to meet their goals. So far it seems to be working!
The results speak for themselves
In a random sampling of our current patients, we found an average of 24 pounds lost in just over 4 months. What is important to us, as well as the patients, is that the loss is consistent and permanent. Many of our patients have been on the weight loss rollercoaster and struggled with trying to maintain extreme diet plans often at the sacrifice of their energy, their ability to feel they can socialize or eat out with family, or their inability to maintain that style of eating long term, just to gain weight back. Our goal for our patients is to allow them to feel that they are learning how to better portion the foods they eat, to incorporate more fruits and vegetables daily, to learn the importance of healthy movement, and to reduce risks of chronic illness and inflammation. Long term, healthy, weight loss.
